Corinthians (SP)

The S.C. Corinthians Paulista club was founded on September 1, 1910 by a group of Portuguese, Italian and Spanish laborers in the vicinity of Bom Retiro. The club has three different nicknames: "Timão", “Centennial Champion”, to due to the coinciding of events in the years of some of its victories in reference to historical facts of Brazil, and "Campeão dos Campeões" (Champion of Champions) because in 1915 the team split up with the Paulista League and at the end of the season defeated the champions 4-1 and also beat the other rivals by 3-0. There's also another tale that explains the last nickname dating back to 1930 where there was a challenge match between the champions of São Paulo and the Rio de Janeiro State Championships and on February 16 a match against Vasco da Gama, in Rio de Janeiro where the Corinthians won by 4-2.

For their first few years, Corinthians Paulista first played in local tournaments followed by São Paulo State Championships. The 1914 season was their first winning season being that they were State Champions for that year.

The Corinthians' stadium is the Estádio Parque São Jorge, officially named Estádio Alfredo Schürig and also known as Fazendinha, in English meaning Little Farm. It was built in 1928 with a maximum capacity of 18,386 people. However, Corinthians play most matches at Pacaembu, a Municipal stadium with a maximum capacity of 37,500. For very important games the team uses the Morumbi stadium, owned by its rival São Paulo that can hold a crowd of over 70,000 people.

The Corinthians continue to be one of the most popular Brazilian football teams, from São Paulo. As of 2004, Corinthians are estimated to have 25 million fans in 2nd place after Flamengo.
