Cruzeiro (MG)
Cruzeiro was founded on January 2, 1921, after a political administrative crisis at Yale when the Italians in Belo Horizonte wanted to imitate the Italians in São Paulo, by establishing football club, the Palestra Itália.
On January of 1942, political reasons regarding the Second World War led to the Brazilian name Ypiranga, but after a consensus in October they finally came up with the name Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. The uniform also switched to a blue shirt and stockings, and white shorts and vice-versa when away and they were it for the first time on November 11, 1942. Cruzeiro is also an elite team being among the only 4 teams in Brazil not to be relegated, is ranked within the top 50 of the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, are usually within the top five favorites for most of their tournaments and amongst the top 5 clubs in Brazil. It’s main rival is the Atlético, which is one of the biggest teams in Brazil.
During 1965 it became a well-known powerful national football team and introduced many stars such as Tostão, Piazza, Natal, and Dirceu Lopes and with these players the club won four Campeonato Mineiro titles in a row. In 1976 they went to the finals of the Intercontinental Cup, now known as the FIFA Club World Championship, and defeated Bayern Munich.
In 2003 Cruzeiro achieved something no other Brazilian team has achieved, to win the Triple Crown by winning the Brazilian League, Brazilian Cup, State Championship, all in the same year and in 2006 they won their 34th Campeonato Mineiro.
