Fluminense (RJ)
Fluminense was founded on July 21, 1902 and is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fluminense means fluvial in Portuguese. Their biggest sporting rivals are from the same city, Flamengo, and is considered the best rivalry in Brazil.
Oscar Cox was responsible for introducing football to Rio and was elected the first president. Their first match was on October 19, 1902. In 1906 the team won their first championship, the Campeonato Carioca, and the next three 1907, 1908 and 1909. In 1911 they were champions and won all the Campeonato Carioca matches.
Fluminense's ground hosted the first match of the Brazil national football team against Exeter City F.C. on July 27, 1914, where Oswaldo Gomes scored the first goal and Brazil won 2-0.
In 1949 they received the IOC’s Olympic Cup, "Coupe Olympique", and for its collection of national and international trophies that the club is considered to be one of the best clubs in Brazil. The Cup is in permanent exhibition at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
Fluminense's fans are called "tricolores", in reference to the team's three colors red, white and green and there stadium is Estádio das Laranjeiras, built in 1905, with a maximum capacity of 8,000 people.
