Palmeiras (SP)
On August 26, 1914 four Italian men from the Italian speaking community of São Paulo founded Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, normally called Palmeiras. Sportiva Palestra Italia was the clubs original name, but changed to the current name on September 14, 1942 due to political reasons during World War II and Palmeiras was the original Palestra Italia, since it was founded about a decade before Cruzeiro.
Palmeiras are one of the most victorious, popular and traditional Brazilian clubs and they play at the Palestra Itália stadium, or Parque Antártica, which has seats for 35,000 people. There uniform consists of green shirts, white shorts and green socks.
In 1951, the club won its the first international club tournament, the Copa Rio and also claims itself as the 1951 World Club Champion, but is waiting for FIFA to release a statement regarding the matter.
Palmeiras went a period of 15 years without any important victories but in 1992 they signed sponsorship with the Italian group Parmalat that lasted a period of 8 years turning it into Brazil's richest club where they also obtained several titles during the Parmalat era. The sponsorship ended in 2000 and left the club in dire straits and they faced their worst year ever in 2002 and were relegated to the Second Division. The following year they returned to the First Division.
