Atlético Paranaense (PR)
Atlético Paranaense was formed on March 26, 1924 from the merge of Internacional and América, which were two traditional teams of Curitiba. The new board of directors changed the clubs name and colors and chose Água Verde, Internacionals old-field, as the club's field.
On April 6, the club played its first match and their first competition match on the 20th of April. It’s active participation in various championships and being an above average team earned them their first state championship title.
In 1925, the club was considered to be one of the primary clubs in its state and in 1934 they attained the ground plot where Estádio da Baixada is located. Later in 1949, the club won its 9th Paranaense State Championship that also gave them their nickname of Furacão, meaning hurricane in English.
In 1995, when Atlético lost to Coritiba 5-1, a new board of directors acquired control and implemented an important project named "Atlético Total" and was the 1st Paranaense club to participate of Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, in recent times replaced by Campeonato Brasileiro.
In 2001, the club its 1st Campeonato Brasileiro and in 2004 the club was a contestant with striker Washington scoring a historical record of 34 goals in a single edition of Campeonato Brasileiro.
So far Atlético has participated in three editions of the Copa Libertadores de América, 2000, 2002 and 2005. In the 2000 edition the club was eliminated in the second round and in 2005 Atlético finished second place after losing to São Paulo Futebol Clube. In 2007, the team partnered with the USA club FC Dallas.
