- Since the 1995 - 1996 season; a victory is worth 3 points and the draw and the loss have had the same value. The German champion will be the one that accumulates the most points by the end of the season.
- Besides the championship for the Bundesliga the three teams at the bottom of the table are relegated into the 2nd Bundesliga; while the top three teams in the 2nd Bundesliga are promoted.
- The top two clubs in the table qualify automatically for the group phase of the UEFA Champions League, while the third-place team enters the Champions League at the playoffs qualifying round.
