History - Winners
The competition’s full name is Copa de S.M. El Rey Don Juan Carlos I. It was initially known as the Copa del Ayuntamiento de Madrid. The Copa del Rey is an annual cup competition for Spaniard football teams and the Spaniard basketball teams also compete for the Copa del Rey, but in a different category.
The competition was first played in 1902. Mr. Carlos Padrós, once president of Madrid FC suggested a football competition to celebrate the coronation of Alfonso XIII. Four other teams joined Madrid FC for the first event, these teams were: FC Barcelona, Club Español de Fútbol, Club Vizcaya and New Foot-Ball de Madrid. The competition featured the first recorded game between FC Barcelona and Madrid FC, with a final score of 3-1. The Copa was won by Club Vizcaya beating FC Barcelona in the final.
The Athletic Bilbao Club was declared winner in 1904 after their opponents Club Español de Madrid failed to show up. In both 1910 and 1913 there was a spilt among the clubs and two rival associations, the Unión Española de Clubs de Fútbol and the Federación Española de Fútbol, which organized rival competitions, the Copa UECF and the Copa FEF. This competition has never been officially recognized by the RFEF. There was no Copa del Rey competition played in 1938.
Club Vizcaya was awarded the first trophy as inaugural winners, Sevilla FC was awarded the Trofeo del Generalísimo in 1939 and Atletico Madrid, winners of the previous year were given the 11th trophy.
The Spaniard clubs Athletic Bilbao and FC Barcelona have won the cup 24 times each and Real Madrid has won it 17 times. Throughout the history of the competition there have been 12 actual trophies.
Four of these have been awarded to FC Barcelona, three to Athletic Bilbao and one to Real Madrid, all for winning the competition several times in a row and/or on separate occasions.
