Football was introduced in 1879 by Copenhagen Ball Club, Kjøbenhavns Boldklub, KB. The Danish Football Association, Dansk Boldspil-Union, DBU, was founded in 1889 and over the next decade organized the development of football throughout the growth of a forest of football clubs all over and in Danish schools.

Until around 1960, Danish football was characterized by its stubborn insistence on the players’ amateur status, alongside the extensive export of its best players to foreign clubs. Nonetheless, the country managed to achieve a few memorable international results, especially the bronze medal at the 1948 Olympic Games and the silver medal at the 1960 Olympic Games.

For the All-Denmark team, the victory of the June 1992 European Championship was a stepping stone. This was an unprecedented event within elite sport. Denmark had not qualified for the final round of the Championship in Sweden, but ten days before the opening match UEFA asked it to enter the competition instead of Yugoslavia. With no much preparation and in a hasty manner the All-Denmark team exceeded the very low expectations. Denmark’s team scored a success, culminating in their 2–0 over Germany in the final match.

Since the mid-1980s, the All-Denmark team has been popular in Europe; the team has in general radiated delight in playing and has demonstrated a fighting spirit. In sporting terms, however, Denmark is no longer small. Participation in no less than eight of ten possible final rounds of the European Championship or World Cup since 1984 and most recently in the 2002 World Cup in Korea-Japan has made the team become part of the big football nations.
