The Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol is the most important football competition of the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol and it has been played since 1957. This tournament is played on a yearly basis with the exception of 1958-1959. Starting in 2005 the competition takes place the first and second halves of every year.
The Ecuadorian championship is divided into various divisions. The first two divisions are called Serie A and Serie B. The first two teams of each division advance to the next-highest division of the FEF, and the last two, fall back to the next-lowest division.
Since 2003, the Ecuadorian championship has been sponsored by the beer brewers Cervecería Andina (CA) from Quito and Compañía de Cervezas Nacionales (CCN) from Guayaquil. Reason why the championship and the cup itself are known as: the copa Pilsener. There are other sponsors for the National Ecuadorian Team, but the main one is the beer brewer.
Important facts
Starting in 2005 the Ecuadorian championship has been divided into two halves called Apertura (Opening) and Clausura (Closing). And the championship winners have to achieve the most points as well.
