The Italian football Serie A league began in 1929 as we know it today. The championship was originally organized in regional groups from 1898 to 1929. No title was awarded in 1927 after Torino were stripped of the championship by the Italian Football Federation.
The Italian football Serie A was considered for many years the pinnacle of football with many major clubs such as AC Milan as they are more commonly known, Juventus (of Turin) and the two Roma clubs AS Roma and SS Lazio considered the giants of the game.
In the 1980’s a massive injection of money to these football clubs reinforced their dominance among the European club scene with Italian clubs often featuring in European Cup and UEFA Cup Finals.
The one common factor within the European leagues is the money of players’ transfers. For example, the current world transfer record is £49.5million for the French captain Zinedine Zidane, who signed for Real Madrid of Spain when he played for Juventus of Italy. It is highly unlikely that any club outside of England, Spain or Italy will ever be able to break that record by signing someone for more money.
In Italy the most successful league club is Juventus with 27 championships followed by A.C. Milan with 17 wins, Internazionale with 17 and Genoa C&FC with 9. As tradition, for every ten titles won, the clubs are allowed to wear a golden star above their club badge.
