The team’s history begins in 1996 as one of the founding members of the MLS. Just two years later in 1998 the team became the first American club to win the CONCACAF championship.
D.C. United’s success rapidly increased during its first years achieving their one and only US Open Cup in 1996. Other MLS Cup titles followed for a total of four; the most recent one in 2004.
The team has produced various soccer players which were part of the MLS All Star team which in 2006 defeated Chelsea the former English champion.
Some of D.C. United most accomplished players are: Brazilian Fred, Argentinean Christian Gomez, Ukrainian Dema Kovalenko and American Richie Williams.
