The Real Salt Lake was founded in 2005 as part of an expansion in the Major League Soccer. The name "Real" that distinguishes the club, was taken from the Spanish language in order to associate the name of the club with the football soccer, as some soccer teams from Spain (such as the popular Real Madrid) use the term in their names.

Jason Kreis, who was a MLS player, is the current RSL's coach since May 2007, after his retirement as player. Colorado Rapids is the RSL's major rival, which plays the annual Rocky Mountain Cup. CD Chivas is another important Real Salt Lake’s rival.

The team began playing its home games at the Rice-Eccles Stadium, from the University of Utah, until they moved their own facility called Rio Tinto Stadium in 2008.

Real Salt Lake reached the playoffs for the first time during the season 2008, finishing in third place of the West Conference and 7th overall, and reaching the finals of the West Conference but losing against the New York Red Bulls 1-0.

This season 2009, the club expects further results in hands of its coach Jason Kreis.
