The San Jose Earthquakes is one of the charter members of the Major League Soccer, funded in 1995. During its first four years, the team was known as the San Jose Clash and they were inactive from 2005 to 2007.
San Jose played in the first game of the MLS history, defeating the D.C. United 1-0.
The Earthquakes have managed to win the MLS Cup twice, in 2001 and 2003, and the MLS Supporters' Shield in 2005.
In December 2005, the franchise was put for sale. The players and the coach Dominic Kinnear were transferred to Houston, Texas, where they formed the new team Houston Dynamo.
On July 18, 2007, it was announced that the San Jose Earthquakes would play again in the 2008 season. During the 2008 season comeback, the Earthquakes ended in 7th place of the West Conference and in the overall season in 13th place, not reaching the playoffs. For this 2009, the Earthquakes expect a better season.
