History - Facts - Teams - Winners
The Portuguese Liga or BWINLIGA as it is also called due to sponsorship purposes is the most important professional football tournament in Portugal.
In the beginning it was known as Primeira Divisão, Primeira Liga, SuperLiga Galp Energia and Liga betandwin.com.
An experimental competition on a round-basis was already being held in the Premier League, before the Portuguese football reform of 1938. But the Campeonato de Portugal knock-out-basis was still the most well known which defined the champion of the tournament.
Once the reform took place, the round-basis competition was implemented as the most important of the year and started to characterize the Portuguese champion. From 1938 to 2000 the name National Championship of the First Division, or just Primeira Divisão (First Division) was used.
It was then renamed in 1999 to Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Liga or simply Primeira Liga, (Premier League), and after sponsorship Galp acquired the naming rights in 2002, it was caleed SuperLiga Galp Energia. Then after having the name Liga betandwin.com for the 2005/2006 season, a new change took place on July 21, 2006 to BWINLIGA (all caps) and that is the name to remain for the following season.
