The Turkcell Super League (formerly National League, First Football League and First Super League) is the professional soccer league in Turkey. The league is the most popular sporting competition in Turkey and it is managed by Turkey’s soccer federation.
It was founded in 1959 in an attempt to unify the most important regional leagues around the country. The season starts in August each year and ends in May with an one month brake between December and January during winter.
The 18 clubs in the league play each other twice, once at home and once away, at the end of the season, the last three teams are relegated to second league category A and are replaced from the ascending three teams from such league.
The first two teams qualify for the champion’s league, the champion entering directly to the group phase and the runners-up entering in the second of three qualifying rounds. The third place and the winner of the Turkey cup are the ones who go for the UEFA cup.
