  • The UEFA Champions League is open to the league champions of all UEFA member associations as well as to the clubs finishing from second to fourth position in the strongest leagues.
  • The number of places in the UEFA Champions League depends on the association's rank in the UEFA coefficients table:
    • Associations ranked 1-3 have four positions
    • Associations ranked 4-6 have three positions
    • Associations ranked 7-15 have two positions
    • Associations ranked 16 or lower have one position
  • An additional place in the UEFA Champions League group stage is reserved for the current champion or title-holder, in case they don't qualify via their domestic league.

UEFA Champions League Finals

The UEFA Champions League final is the most important match of the season in European club football. The stadium to host the final is selected two years in advance by UEFA.

This 2008-09 UEFA Champions League will be the 54th season in the history of this competition and will be played between July 1st, 2008 and May 27, 2009, when the final will take place at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

In the season 2007-08 the final was played at Moscow, in the Luzhniki Stadium on May 21st, 2008, when the Manchester United won their third title against Chelsea. For the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League season the final is expected to be played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.

The next most successful teams are:

  • 9 titles: Real Madrid
  • 7 titles: A.C. Milan
  • 5 titles: Liverpool FC
  • 4 titles: Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax.

Five clubs have been awarded the UEFA Champions League trophy permanently:

  • Real Madrid, 1956 to 1960
  • Ajax 1971–73
  • Bayern Munich, 1974–76
  • AC Milan, 2003
  • Liverpool FC, 2005

UEFA Champions League is a highly profitable competition for the clubs that reach the group stage.  UEFA distributes an important part of the revenue obtained from television deals between these clubs.
