Important facts
- The UEFA Intertoto Cup was originally created in 1961 as a way of generating money for football pools companies in the summer closed season.
- From 1998 till 2005, the tournament was played with two-legged knockout ties at each stage, with clubs from more successful nations entering at a later stage.
- The format of the Cup changed for the 2006–2007 season; now there are three rounds as a replacement for of the previous five, and the eleven winning teams from the third round will go through to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
- No more than one team from each national association will be allowed to enter.
- Seeding and entries are determined by each association. Teams from the weakest federations will enter at the first round stage.
- Traditionally, the UEFA Intertoto Cup begins in June and it is open to clubs that ended directly behind the qualifiers for UEFA's two major club competitions in their respective domestic championships.
- For all ties in the competition, clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis, with the club scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round.
