History - Facts - Teams - Winners
The Uruguayan First Division is the top category of Uruguayan football and it is organized by the Uruguayan Football Association.
Between 1900 and 1931, the league was a recreational competition. The professional league was created in 1931, being disputed for the first time in the following year of 1932.
After 1994, the competition was divided in two stages, called Opening Championship (Torneo Apertura) and Closing Championship (Torneo Clausura), these are played at the end of the season a two legged final match between the winners of the two tournaments.
Presently the number of teams are 16, after they were decreased from 17 for the 2006/2007 season (two relegations and one promotion).
A change that will come with the present 2007/2008 season is that the "European season" system is going to be change after this season, since it seams to not be working for the clubs.
In 2008 a special tournament will be played during the second part of the year, which will qualify to 2009 Copa Sudamericana; while the for last time in winter 2008 will qualify as libertadores teams for the coming season.
