The Miami Masters, Sony Ericsson Open, is a joint tennis event, currently part of the ATP Masters 1000 events of the ATP World Tour and a Premier Mandatory event in the WTA Tour.
It was created in 1985 by Butch Buchholz and during its early days it took place at the Laver’s International Tennis Resort in Delray Beach. One year later in 1986 the tournament was relocated to Boca Raton in Key Biscayne
Currently; the Miami Masters takes place during the month of March at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in hard courts. In the year 2000 the sponsor title changed to Sony Ericsson Open but in 2002 it was renamed the NASDAQ-100 Open. However; in 2007 a $20 million deal was sealed and the tournament became once again the Sony Ericsson Open.
The 12-day tournament draws the best 96 men and women in the sport of tennis; due to the event’s incredible crowds it has been called the “Fifth Grand Slam”.
In 2006, the tournament became the first tennis Masters to implement the “instant replay” allowing players to challenge the umpires calls.
