This Women Basketball team was first founded in 1997 in the city of Houston in Texas. Since their very first year of basketball action the team achieved its first WNBA Championship title followed by a four year winning streak that ended in the year 2000.
Amongst some of the most notable female players who played for the Comets are: Sonja Henning, Yolanda Moore, Dawn Stanley, Lindsay Taylor and Dominique Canty. While the two retired numbers are: #10 Kim Perrot and #14 Cynthia Cooper.
Since 2006 the team has been led by head coach Karleen Thompson. The team's overall record currently stands at a total of 231 games won, 140 games lost and a winning average of .623 along with the participation in 20 different playoff games.
In 2006 the team’s rights were on sale and the businessman Hilton Coch purchased the entire franchise. A couple of years later Koch announced the Comets would play their home games at the new coliseum the Reliant Arena.
