The New York Liberty team is based in New York City, New York and plays their home games at the Madison Square Garden. They are called Liberty making reference to the Statue of Liberty in this city.
The Liberty is the sister team of the NBA's New York Knicks.
They started to play in the WNBA in 1997, as one of the charter members of the league, and since then, they have made it to the finals 4 times although they have never been able to conquer a WNBA championship.
Among their players, we can find Loree Moore, Shameka Christon, Ashley Battle, Erin Thorn and Janel McCarville and its Hall of Fame includes the name of Teresa Weatherspoon.
In July 2008, the Liberty played the first professional basketball game of a regular season to be played outdoors, in a game called "Liberty Outdoor Classic", against the Indiana Fever.
