The Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB) is the highest basketball league in Spain and it's considered among the best basketball leagues of Europe. It has been active since 1956; then called Liga Nacional and received its current name in 1983.
The league is formed by 18 teams and plays under the rules of the FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball). The winningest teams in the league are:
The regular season of ACB championship is held every year between October and May. In the season 2007-08 some changes were introduced:
- The first place in the Regular Season is granted with direct entrance to the following Euroleague Season.
- The Playoffs’ Quarterfinals and Semifinals reduced the number of matches on the rounds from 5 to 3.
Besides the ACB Championship, the ACB league has other two tournaments:
- The Copa del Rey held every year and played by the top eight teams in the Spanish League.
- The Supercopa de España Baloncesto held every year since 2004 and played among four teams:
- ACB Champion
- ACB runner-up
- Copa del Rey champion
- Host of the tournament
