Aris Thessaloniki has been one of the favorites professional basketball teams from the Greek League (HEBA) since its early years. It is based as its name indicates in Thessaloniki, which is the capital of the largest region (Macedonia) of Greece.
The club was founded in 1922 and it is considered the most prominent of all sports teams from Greece. Aris besides having won 10 national championships and 8 Greek Cups, has won 3 international cups.
Most of the titles they own came during the 80's and the beginnings of the 90's. In fact, they were Greek Champions for seven years in a row
(from 1987 to 1991); achievement that
granted them the nickname "The Empire".
Since the 1979 championship victory the name Nikos Galis stand out and quickly became famous around the nation; even nowadays, it is considere by many, to be one of the best basketball players in the history of Greek.
Following the 83-84 season Panagiotis Giannakis was transfer to the team, and next to Galis, became the dynamic duo of Aris BC that would lead the seven years of reign.
During the past seasons the 5th place has been the lowest position the team has obtain in the final tables, it was actually their 2007/08 season place after the playoffs.
