Facts

• The Pro A is the premier league of the Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB).

• Was founded in 1987 as Nationale A1 and became part of the LNB.

• Until 2006/07 season the Pro A was composed of 18 clubs, during that season the league changed to 16 and is expected to be reduce to 14 teams in view of the creation of Superligue de France in 2009.

• All 16 Pro A division teams play each other twice during the regular season and the top 8 teams qualify for the playoffs. The winner of the playoffs will become the Champion of France.

• When the teams be reduced to 14, the three teams in the bottom of regular season standings will be relegated to Pro B.

• Starting in 2006-07, all rounds except for the finals are best-of-three series the final is a single game played at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris.

The French First Division was known by different names since its foundation:

• 1921 to 1949: Excellence
• 1950 to 1987: Nationale 1
• 1987 to 1992: Nationale 1A (N 1 A)
• 1992 to 1993: Nationale A1 (N A 1)
• after 1993: Pro A
