16th Stage: Cuneo → Jausiers, 157 km
Tuesday 22 July, 2008
This is the second Alps stage starting in Cuneo in Italy, which is enclosed by magnificent Alpine panorama. The cyclists will have to ascend the Col de la Lombarde (21,2 km at 7%) and the Col de la Bonette-Restefond (26,7 km at 6,2%) to finally go down-hill to Jausiers. Cuneo and Jausiers are mutually villes étapes inédites for the Tour de France and the Col de la Bonette will permit the riders to get to the highest point of the Tour at 2802 metres. In less than one week away from Paris, the race’s upshot won’t be final. This is a short stage, which brings the group all the way and previous to a dizzying decline that should build to an amazing end among the top riders.
Cuneo: is the capital of the Piedmontese Province of Cuneo, the third largest of Italy’s provinces by area and has a population of 55,000 inhabitants. It is located at the foot of the Maritime Alps, on the Stura di Demonte river where it emerges from the Valle Stura. It is surrounded by magnificent Alpine scenery that captivate you with its colorful and aromatic streets. This is its first time as a stage town for the Tour de France.
Jausiers: this town is located at the foot of Europe’s highest road (2,802 m) and relishes in combining Provence with the Alps. Lying in the Ubaye valley very close to Cuneo in Italy, with barely 1,000 inhabitants. Jausiers is the smallest town to hold a Tour de France stage finish, which it’s the town’s first time.
