Floorball History

The sport dates back to the 1950’s in the USA and was formally called floor hockey and its invention is quite uncertain.
The sport of Floorball was first played in Sweden in the early 1970’s and later spread through out Europe in the late 70’s.
The International Floorball Federation was established in 1986
Presently, four countries dominate the international game and these are: Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Czech Republic.

Elitserien or the Elite League is the highest league in the system of Swedish Floorball and includes the top 12 Swedish Floorball teams.
In 1995-96 the first season began when it replaced the Division 1 league
Between the seasons 1995-96 and 1998-99 the league was divided into a Northern and a Southern group and since the 1999-2000 season, it is considered a national league.
Early in March 2007 it was decided that the Elitserien would add 2 more teams for a total of 14 from the beginning of the 2008-09 season
