- The 2nd Bundesliga is the Second Division of professional football in Germany.
- It was introduced in 1974 and it is composed by 40 clubs which are divided into two leagues (North and South) which compete for promotion into the Bundesliga.
- Since 1994/95, there have been 18 teams in the second division
- Fortuna Köln has been the most successful team within the league.

- The top three teams gain promotion into the Bundesliga.
- The bottom four teams are relegated into the Regional leagues.
- Starting from the season 2008/9 the bottom teams will be relegated to the new introduced 3rd Bundesliga.
- During the 2004/2005 season, that several matches in the 2nd Bundes liga and the Regional liga were manipulated by referee Robert Hoyzer.
