Argentina:

  • Argentina is a very successful Copa America participant and has won 14 different times and has also achieved the 'extra' South American Championships in 1941, 1945 & 1946.
  • In 1992 it won the Confederations Cup and the Kirin Cup.
  • In early March 2007, Argentina reached for the first time the top FIFA World Rankings.

 

Bolivia:

  • In 1963 Bolivia won the Copa America although they have never advanced the round at any FIFA World Cup.
  • In 1994 after a 44-year break the Bolivian team qualified for the Copa America.

 

Brazil:

  • Brazil is the most successful football nation in the World Cup history winning five championships in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002.
  • It is the only nation that has played in every World Cup.
  • The CBF manages the Brazilian National Football team.
  • The Brazil national football team is controlled by the CBF and represents Brazil in international football competitions.
  • A very common quip used in Brazil when referring to football is: "The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it".

 

Chile:

  • In 1930 Chile Football National team participated in the first World Cup.
  • In 1962 Chile was the World Cup host country and the team achieved third place in the overall standings.
  • In the Copa America tournament the team has reached four finals but has never won the competition.

 

Colombia: 

  • For the 1958 World Cup the Colombian team entered the competition for the first time.
  • For the 1998 World Cup in France, Colombia made a quick exit which was unexpected due to the previous team’s performance.
  • In 2001 Colombia served as host for the Copa America and took the title by betting Mexico.

 

Ecuador:

  • The Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbolis the govern body of the Ecuador national football team.
  • The Ecuadorian team was known as one of the weakest teams in CONMEBOL but in recent years the team has shown process making their first World Cup qualification in 2002.
  • For the 2006 World Cup, Ecuador reached the final 16 losing to England.

 

Mexico:

  • The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FEMEXFUT) controls the national Mexican football team, known also as El Tri.
  • The Mexicans have entered four consecutive World Cups reaching the second round on all four occasions.
  • Since 1993 the team has had a good participation at most Copa America tournaments.

 

Paraguay:

  • The Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol oversees the Paraguay national football team.
  • Paraguay has won two Copa America tournaments in 1953 and 1979.
  • Some of the team’s key players are retiring, therefore, the Paraguay squad is going through a major chance.
  • For the 2007 Copa America; Paraguay is in Group C against Colombia, USA and Argentina.

 

Peru:

  • The Peruvian team competes with the other nine South American nations in the CONMEBOL conference.
  • The country has qualified for three World Cups between 1970 and 1982.
  • The team won the Copa America in 1975.
  • In 2004 Peru hosted the Copa America losing in the quarter finals against Argentina.

 

Uruguay:

  • The Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol controls the Uruguay’s National Football team.
  • It is one of the most successful South American teams as they won two World Cups, the Olympic Gold Medal two times in 1924 and 1928 and the Copa América fourteen different times.

 

USA:

  • The American team is currently ranked 29th in the FIFA World Rankings.
  • The United States Soccer Federation controls the US Men’s National soccer team.
  • The team has participated in five consecutive FIFA World Cups.

 

Venezuela:

  • Venezuela first participated in the 1967 Copa America and finished in 5 th place.
  • The 1975 tournament saw Venezuela drawn in a group with Brazil and Argentina, and finished bottom with an 11-0 defeat to Argentina.
  • Venezuela has not been a very successful football nation, but in recent years has improved fact which we will see true as the team performs in future tournaments.
