French League 2 was founded in 1933 and it is one of two divisions making up the LFP. Currently, it is composed of twenty clubs.
The twenty clubs within the Ligue 2 play each other twice throughout the season, forming a 38-match schedule. At the conclusion of the season, the top three clubs are advanced to Ligue 1 for the following season, while the bottom three teams of Ligue 2 are relegated to the Championnat National.
