Stade Rennais was established in 1901 and for many years they remained in the regional and lower football divisions of France. The team became professional in 1932, when they entered to the first division for the first time. Since then, the club has played 51 seasons in the top flight of French football and 18 seasons in the second division.

Throughout their history, Stade Rennais has won two French Cups, one UEFA Intertoto Cup, two Ligue 2 championships along with other minor titles.
 
In recent times, the team has been improving their performances, finishing in good positions of the table, even getting very close to a UEFA Champions League appearance and participating twice in the UEFA Cup.

For the 2007-08 season, Stade Rennais finished the season in the 6th place with 58 points and a record of 16-12, qualifying to the UEFA Intertoto Cup. The squad has had a good start in the season 2008-09; as of the midseason they were located in the 5th place of the table.
