The FC Sochaux team was originally established in 1928 and is based in the town of Montebeliard. Sochaux obtained their first major titles during the season of 1935 and 1938, when they captured the Ligue 1championship titles. The club has also obtained over the years 2 French Cups, one Ligue 2 title and a League Cup in the 2003-04 season.

Sochaux has played 60 seasons at the first football division (D1 and L1), what makes them the team with the most participation in the top flight. In Ligue 2 the team has only played in 10 seasons. However, despite their many years in Ligue 1, Sochaux did not win any major trophy in many years until 2004 when they won the Coupe de la Ligue.

In recent years, the team experienced a rebirth that placed them in the top half of the league during six consecutive seasons (2001-02 to 2006-07) and with three trips to the UEFA Cup in those years. They also won the Coupe de France in 2007.

Last season 2007-08 Sochaux fell again into the bottom half of the table, finishing in the 14th position with 44 points, 10 wins, 14 ties and 14 losses.
