Saint-Étienne

AS Saint-Étienne was created 1919 and became professional in 1933, obtaining later in 1937 their first promotion to the Ligue 1. Saint-Étienne is considered one of the most successful football teams in France history, having 10 First Division championships and 6 French Cups among their most important honours.

The team had its golden era between the 1960s and 1970s, when they accomplished most of their titles. After 1982 the club faced some financial issues that affected the team’s performance, which spent many years between the bottom-half of the Ligue 1 table and the Ligue 2.

In recent years the team has been trying to make a comeback and in the season 2004-05 Saint-Étienne appeared in the European stage for the first time in many years when they qualified for the Intertoto Cup after finishing 6th in the Ligue 1.

For last season 2007-08, Les Verts finished in 5th place of the table, which is the best position they have achieved in almost three decades and reached a spot for the UEFA Cup 2008-09, where they are already qualified for the Round of 32.
