Valenciennes

The Valenciennes FC was organized in 1913 and they started playing in regional leagues, until 1933 when the club turned professional. The team has always had a low profile in French football, spending many years between leagues and even losing their professional status in 1996 after two seasons in Division 3. The club re-established their professional section until 2005.

During the season 2005-06, the club was promoted to participate in Ligue 2 and in hands of their head coach Antoine Kombouaré, they ended in first place, earning the promotion to Ligue 1.

For the season 2006-07 the club battled to remain in the top flight and finished in 17th place, barely avoiding relegation. Last season 2007-08, les Athéniens ended in a better 13th place with a total of 45 points and a record of 12 wins, 9 draws and 17 losses. However, the club is having a tough start of season this 2008-09 and they will have to fight to get off the relegation zone the rest of the campaign.
