Lorient

The football club of Lorient-Bretagne Sud was created in 1926 and is based in Lorient, Brittany. The club first played in the regional third division but progressed over the years to higher levels. The team has had three periods of time as a professional club, from 1967 to 1977, from 1988 to 1991 and more recently since 1995 to present. In the 1998-1999 season, Lorient was promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time.

The club has mostly played in Ligue 2, for 23 seasons, and has played only in five seasons at League 1. The only major achievement of Lorient throughout their history is the French Cup title in 2001-02 season. One of the biggest wins of Les Merlus was in the 2005-06 season by defeating in great way Stade Brestois 5-0 at home.

Lorient did very good last 2007-08 season and are aiming for a chance again this season. Les Merlus concluded in the 10th place of the table with 52 points and a record of 12 wins, 10 losses and 16 draws. According to Coach Gourcuff, this 2008-09 Lorient will try to avoid mistakes and develop their squad in the top flight.
