The FC Schalke 04 was organized on 1904 and since then, the club has become very respectable in Germany, even though the best era for the team was prior the creation of the Bundesliga, reaching the German Championship seven times between 1934 and 1958.
The team got involved in the bribing scandal of the early 1970’s and after that; the club was uneven on performances until the 1980’s.
More recently, with a very promising renovation from 1990 to 2002, the club has become a very distinctive squad in Germany. The team managed to win the UEFA Cup in 1997 and the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) on consecutive years in 2001 and 2002.
Manager Rutten knows that Schalke has the ability to lift the title and at the least secure a Champion’s League place for this season 2008-09, thanks to a strong committed squad containing very good players.
The FC Schalke 04 has a historic rivalry with Borussia Dortmund; both teams belong to the area of North Rhine-Westphalia and the matches between them are historically called Revierderdy (District Derby).
The teams have faced each other 127 times since 1925 and currently Schalke leads the series with 50 wins, 44 losses and 33 draws.
