The Club was formed in 1904, and as back then the Italian championship was limited to northern teams, the club had to compete to its neighbor contenders, so they decided to promote games on foreign grounds, which helped them sign abroad players for many years, until the 1930’s when the format of the Italian championship changed and included southern teams.

After a good start in the Serie A, the team declined during war years, finally facing relegation in 1942, and after that, the team went up and down between divisions several times.

Due to their overseas experiences in the past, they decided to hire all-time super star Diego Maradona in the 80's and the decision proved to be wise, as they won their first national and European titles during his era.

The team declined again during the 1990’s, when they spent some years in the Serie B again and were even downgraded to the Serie C1 in 2004 after many financial problems, but after a big restoration made the following seasons, the team managed to come back finally to Serie A in June 2007.

In the season 2007-08, their first campaign back in Serie A, the team managed to finish in a respectable 8th position in the table and even earned the pass to the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2008, even though they were eliminated in the first round.

Recently promoted Napoli is back on the top elite of Italian football for 08-09 after a six year nonappearance and is apprehensive to survive downgrading this season.
