The foundation of the club dates from the beginning of the twentieth century. The team has suffered several name changes and has been canceled and refunded as well several times throughout their history.

The team has spent most of its time in the lower divisions (Serie B and Serie C, C1 and C2). Nevertheless, it has been among the elite teams since its most recent promotion to Serie A in 2004, finishing in good table positions and even winning an UEFA Cup place in the following three consecutive seasons (2005, 2006 and 2007).

However, season 2007-08 was not as good since the team finished in the 11th position of the table with a negative record of 12 wins, 11 draws and 15 loses and missing European competitions.

For the season 2008-09, former manager Stefano Colantuono was called back to lead the team one more time; but after the first two loses of the team in the campaign, Colantuono was sacked again and Davide Ballardini was appointed to coach the team, being replaced for the 2009/10 season by Walter Zenga.
