The club was funded in 1902 as the Madrid Football Club and since the early days, the team became a very successful team in Spain, since after only two years in the Spanish league, they won their first four Copa del Rey titles on consecutive years from season 1904-05 to 1907-08. The team received the name of Real Madrid on 1920 as an honour by the King Alonso XIII.
Real Madrid was qualified by the FIFA as the most successful team in the 20th century, as they have won 31 Championships of La Liga, 17 Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup), nine European Cups ( Champions League) and two UEFA Cups, besides several other domestic and international titles.
The Merengues have spent all of their history in the Spain first division (La Liga), and most of the time finishing in the top half of the table. They also hold the world record of the longest unbeaten run of league matches at home, with a total of 121.
During the most recent seasons, after the change of century, the team has won the Champions League twice, in 2000 and 2002; and La Liga four times, the last two in consecutive seasons: 2006-07 and 2007-08.
The Real Madrid is also know by having great football stars in their squad, such Iker Casillas, who is considered as one of the best goalies in the world, and the all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League, Raúl, who is the captain of the team.
