The Villarreal club was created on 1923 and they stayed in division 3 for many years, were promoted to the second division in middle 70’s and then back to third a few years later.
Nevertheless, by the early 1980’s, they started to dominate division 2 until finishing third in the 1999-200 season and earning a La Liga promotion that the team has been able to maintain.
One of their biggest achievements was during the 2003 and 2004, when they won the Intertoto Cup both years.
A stunning second place in La Liga last season was a deserved reward for Villarreal as they capitalized on Barcelona's problems to capture a high finish and guarantee entry into the UEFA Champions League group stage once again.
