Created in 1906, Sporting quickly became one of the most popular clubs in Portugal, achieving a total stat of 19 national cups, 18 national championship titles and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1964.
From 1906 to 1939, the club portrayed excellence in the Cup of Portugal and after 1940 they were dominating the Portuguese Championship.
From 1998 to 2008, the club has formed some of the best players of which elite teams like Manchester United have taken advantage hiring some of their best performers, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.
On the Portugal Liga season 2007-08, Sporting finished second in the table, winning their pass for the UEFA Champions League 2008-09 group stage. This is the fifth appearance of the team on the most important competition in Europe.
Sporting is counting with players like Jose Moutinho, Fabio Rochembach and the young Manuel Veloso to strengthen the team and try to go further the group stage of the tournament for the first time in team’s history.
