The CFR Cluj was created in 1907 and spent most of its formation in the back-door divisions.
The team jumped in between leagues during the war years especially in Divizia B and third league. They were able to aim for Divizia A in 1969 and they managed to avoid relegation until 1976. From that year to 2002, the club had kept struggling in between Division B and C, but with new sponsors, upper management and new players, the club went back to Romania’s first division in 2004.
The team participated in its first European tournament in 2005 at the UEFA Intertoto Cup, where they advanced all the way to the final and lost to the French RC Lens.
Season 2007-08 was very successful for the CFR, since they had a great performance in domestic leagues, winning their first Liga I and Copa României Championships and qualifying to the 2008-09 season of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in team’s history.
This is a huge step and challenge for the team since they are competing with the best teams as they are entering to the biggest event of them all in Europe.
