In Spain the first ever lacrosse tournament to take place was celebrated in August at the famous Valle Hermoso Stadium in Madrid.
When the games first took place, Spain was in the grip of a heat wave with tremendously high daytime temperatures.
“Madrid Lacrosse 2003” can be regarded as the beginning of competitive Spanish lacrosse as it received press coverage (TV and radio) in Spain, with all games broadcast live across local radio.
A strong Spaniard team participated in the competition and throughout the tournament midfielders, defenders and attackers all took turns in goal.
While in the competition Madrid came close to a great victory when a rasping shot rattled the cross bar, before being hooked away to safety by Tim Humphries, in the Southampton defence. Then a new game plan was introduced to mark the experienced striker to take him out the game, which proved to be successful.
