This competition is for British Nation League clubs. Currently, it has been sponsored by the Northern Rail, therefore, the name stands as the Northern Rail Cup.
With only five years of history, the competition is the result of what used to be the Northern Ford Premiership at which participated a total number of 18 teams.
In 2002 it was known as the Buddies Cup, then between the years of 2003 and 2004 the Cup carried the name of Arriva Trains Cup.
