Elena Dementieva is a Russian tennis player, who at the age of 13 played and won the Les Petit As, her first international tournament. In 1997 she entered the top 500 of the WTA. The following year she turned pro and in 1999 she climbed to the top 100 in the WTA world rankings. Dementieva is right-handed and her best weapon is the two-handed backhand.
In 1999 she was runner-up of the Federation Cup after losing 4-1 in the final against Serena Williams. In the Australian Open and the French Open she reached the second round. At Wimbledon she was eliminated in the first round and in the U.S. Open she advanced up until the third round.
In 2000, after winning more than 40 singles matches, she placed herself within the top 20 of the WTA. She reached the semifinals in the U.S. Open, where Lindsay Davenport eliminated her.
In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Dementieva won the silver medal after losing against Venus Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the final match.
During the 2001 season, she suffered a shoulder injury, so she had to change her game. This affected her on-the-court performance quite a bit. Despite the adversities, the Russian remained competing during the year and finished in the top 20 of the WTA.
In 2002, Dementieva along with Janette Husárová was the runner-up in the U.S. Open doubles. She also won the WTA Tour Championships in singles. In Moscow, she was runner-up after losing against Jelena Dokic in the final.
In 2003 she won her first WTA Tour title at the Bausch & Lomb Championships, defeating on the way several top 10 tennis players. Later, Dementieva won two consecutive titles, one in Bali and the other in Shanghai, by defeating Chanda Rubin in the two finals. In Wimbledon she reached the doubles semifinals. This gave her the opportunity to reach the top 10, finishing the year as the world No. 8th.
In 2004, Elena had good progress in her professional tennis career. She won the title in Miami Masters and climbed to sixth in the world rankings.
She played her first Grand Slam final in the French Open, where she was beaten by compatriot Anastasia Andreyevna Myskina. In the U.S. Open, she reached her second Grand Slam final. There, Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated her. In Wimbledon, she didn’t overcome the first round losing to Sandra Kleinova.
In 2005, Elena Dementieva achieved six semifinals, including one in the U.S. Open. In the Fed Cup, she made took a key-role in Russia’s victory over France.
In the early 2006 Julia Schruff eliminated Dementieva during the first round of the Australian Open. Later on, in the Toray Pan Pacific Open, she won her first Tier I title. In August she defeated Jelena Jankovic in the JP Morgan Chase Open and won the sixth title of her career.
In the U.S. Open, Dementieva was beaten by Janković in the quarterfinals.
In 2007, Elena won two titles, reached three semifinals and achieved five quarterfinals. In the Australian Open she reached the fourth round and in Wimbledon she made it to the third round. In the U. S. Open she was eliminated in the first round. With these results, Dementieva fell to the twentieth place in the WTA rankings.
Later in the Kremlin Cup, Dementieva won and recovered the tenth place of the WTA. She only lasted there for a week, since in the Zurich Open she lost in the first round and fell to the eleventh place. She failed to qualify to the final tournament of the year, the Sony Ericsson Championship.
For the Australian Open 2008, Elena reached the fourth round, but she could not continue after Maria Sharapova defeated her in her way to win the tournament. Dementieva played really well in various tournaments, rising to the eighth place of the WTA rankings.
In Wimbledon 2008, she also did an excellent job by reaching the final, but once there Venus Williams defeated her. In the Beijing Olympics she captured the gold medal after taking over Dinara Safina in the final.
Elena had the opportunity to become the world No.1 in the U.S. Open, where she reached the semifinals, but Jankovic defeated her 6-4, 6-4. She finished the year third in the WTA rankings and qualified to the Sony Ericsson Championship, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In the 2009 Australian Open, Dementieva again had the opportunity to become world No.1 on the WTA Tour. This time it was Serena Williams, who stopped her after winning 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of this Grand Slam.
In Wimbledon, she lost to Serena Williams, and didn´t make it pass the semifinals for the second-straight year. In the U.S. Open she was defeated 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 by Melanie Oudin in the second round.
In the first Grand Slam of 2010, Justine Henin prevented Dementieva from making it past the second round of the Australian Open after beating her 5-7, 6-7 (6).
