History:
- Fed Cup is the leading team competition in women's tennis which started in 1963.
- Until 1995 the competition was known as the Federation Cup
- In 1923 Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman originated the idea for a women's team competition
- For the first challenge the participating teams were Australia and the United States. The US appeared as the champion nation and has since put their mark on the competition with a total of 17 titles.
- By 1994, 73 nations took part in the competition and the host nation of a Federation Cup event was required to build a special tennis compound, giving birth to what became known as the Federation Cup.
