In 1997 he won the US Open boys doubles and in 1998 the French Open singles and doubles, becoming professional in 1999.

He is well known as “ El bombardero de La Reina” or "Hand of Stone". and as a player he is recognized for having one of the hardest hitting forehands in the circuit.
