Jelena Jankovic

Jelena Jankovic born on February 28, 1985. Her career began by age nine while she trained at the Tennis Academy of Nick Bollettieri. In 2001 she won the Junior Australian Open. By the year 2006 she entered the WTA ranked 15 as she reached the US Open semifinals.

During the 2006 campaign Jankovic had a losing streak of ten straight matches. It wasn’t until the French Open Grand Slam that she was able to defeat French player Marion Bartolli but eventually lost to Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 6-3. Jankovic’s turning point was during Wimbledon where she overcame defending champion Venus Williams in three sets in the 3rd round; she became the first player to ever defeat the two Williams sisters. Later on at U.S Open she reached the semifinals but lost against to Justine Henin-Hardenne 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. She ended the season in the 12th position of the rankings.

The following year she won her first career Tier I title, at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina, defeating Venus Williams. On European red clay, Janković won her second career Tier I title at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, defeating second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final. The following week Janković reached the final of the Ordina Open in the Netherlands and became the first player since Chris Evert in 1974 to win 50 matches in the first half of a year.

For this new 2008 season Jakovic stated that she would not participate in so many events in order to concentrate on the Grand Slams and Tier I events. Jankovic joined forces with Djokovic in order to participate in the Hopman Cup representing the Serbian team. At the recent Australian Open she advanced to the quarterfinals defeating Serena Williams 6-3, 6-4. She is currently ranked among the top 3 in the world.
