The South American tennis player Juan Martin del Potro was born in 1988 in a Tandil, Argentina. His tennis formation began when he was only seven years of age. It was then until 2003 when the young player participated in the first ITF event. With only 15 years Del Potro won his first professional level match qualifying for the final in Campos do Jordao in Brazil. Also, in 2005 he participates in his first Grand Slam tournament the US Open.

For the 2006 ATP Tour, Del Potro played his first ATP Tournament in Viña del Mar as well in the Roland Garros and US Open but he was out in the first round in both competitions. By 2007 Del Potro managed his best performance at the Miami Masters reaching the fourth round but lost to Rafa Nadal. That same year he won the ATP doubles tournament in Indianapolis. More recently during the present 2008 season Del Potro increased his ranking and got very close to the top ten. For such a young player he has already achieved four ATP titles and he is expected to be within the top tennis players in the coming years.

2009

Juan Martin Del Potro had a good start by winning the tournament in Auckland. He was the first Argentine player to do so.

In the Australia Open he reached the quarter-finals but was eliminated by Roger Federer with a score of 3-6, 0-6 and 0-6.

In Roland Garros, he showed signs of having improved significantly his game. He made it to the semifinals, a first in his career, where he was defeated by Roger Federer 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 1-6, 4-6.

At Wimbledon he failed to qualify to the second round, since he was eliminated by Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets.

In the U.S. Open is where Del Potro lived his best moments of the year. He easily surpassed his rivals to reach the final where he defeated Roger Federer comfortably 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. This was his first Grand Slam title.

Del Potro ended 2009 with a record of 54 wins and 16 losses.

2010

Del Potro began 2010 by taking fourth place in the world rankings. In the Australian Open he reached the knockout stage, but was beaten by Marin Cilic 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

Due to an injury in his right wrist, he could not participate in the ATP 250 in Marseille and the ATP 250 at Dubai. The injury also prevented him from competing in the Masters Series in Indian Wells and Miami, and was not present in the first round of the Davis Cup.
