Madrid Masters
The Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open, often referred as Madrid Masters, is an annual tennis tournament that is currently held in Madrid, Spain.
The tournament used to be played on indoor hard courts from 1990 to 2008. During this time the competition has held first in Stockholm, Sweden for 5 years and then it was moved to Germany for another 7 years. In 2002 the tournament was moved to Madrid, Spain and until 2008 it was played in mid October at the Madrid Arena.
Starting season 2009, there have been several changes in the Madrid Masters format. The tournament was moved to a new venue, the Caja Mágica, also in Madrid, to be played on clay courts. In addition, the tournament has become a joint event and it is categorized as an ATP Masters 1000 for men and a WTA Premier Mandatory for women. It will be played now in May as part of the clay season as a preparation to the French Open Grand Slam.
