Nikolay Davydenko is a Ukrainian tennis player, who has been involved in tennis since he was 7 years-old. In search of better opportunities he decided to move to Germany where he developed his tennis skills. There he had the option to participate in a lot of tournaments. In this matches he was able to earn considerable prize money.
After turning 18 years-old, he was nationalized Russian and has represented that country thereafter.
Davydenko began his professional tennis career in 1999 and by mid-2000 he was participating in many half-category tournaments, where he obtained a couple titles and advanced to the semifinals three times in the Futures Tour. He made his Futures’ debut in Amsterdam and reached the semifinals. Then, in Germany, he obtained his first Challenger title.
2001
He made his Grand Slam debut at the Australia Open. He demonstrated great talent and ability and reached the second round. He achieved two more challenger titles, one in Germany and the other in Turkey. He closed the year by advancing to the quarterfinals in Basel.
2002
In 2002, Davydenko had a good participation in the ATP Tour, reaching the quarter-finals in Bastad and Vienna. He also won his fourth Challenger title in Szczecin.
2003
He achieved his first ATP title in the Adelaide tournament. Later in the Estoril Open, he won his second ATP tournament. In Barcelona and St. Pölten he had good performances. With this he managed to finish the season ranked among the top 50 of the world.
2004
Davydenko's career continues to grow. He won his third ATP in the BMW Open at Munich. In October of that year he won the Kremlin Cup in the Moscow Tournament in both singles and doubles. This gave him the opportunity to ascend positions and finish the year among the top 30.
2005
Keeping his good pace, Davydenko advanced to the quarter-finals in the Australia Open. In St. Pölten he obtained his fifth ATP, after defeating Austrian, Jürgen Melzer. He surprised everyone in the tennis world when he reached the semifinals in the Roland Garros. There he was defeated by Mariano Puerta with a crushing score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6. However, later that season it was discovered that Puerta played that game under the influence of banned substances. This forced the officials to take the title from the disgraced player. Puerta was finally expelled from the professional competition.
This gave Davydenko the opportunity to place himself among the top ten. Before ending the year, he managed to get to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters and the Masters in Paris. In the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai he reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by David Nalbandian. He finished the season in fifth place of the ATP ranking and No. 1 in Russia.
2006
After a good performance in the previous year, Nikolay Davydenko reached the quarter-finals of the Australia Open and Roland Garros. At Wimbledon he did not had that much luck. He was disqualified in the first round. He recovered from that and won in Sopot, adding also to his list of victories the ATP of New Haven, USA.
His good competitive performance led him to the semifinals of the U.S. Open, where he lost against Roger Federer.
To close a good year, Davydenko won in Moscow and then achieved the Masters Series title in Paris. He gave the victory to Russia in the Davis Cup by defeating Argentina, which allowed him to finish third in the ATP rankings.
2007
Once again, his third in a row, he got stuck in the quarter-finals of the Australia Open. Although, despite this, he did not lost his touch and reached the semifinals in Roland Garros, where he faced Roger Federer, but lost 5-7, 6-7, 6-7.
At Wimbledon he caused surprise after reaching the quarterfinals. He achieved his second consecutive semifinal in the U.S. Open and bravely defended the title he won in Moscow after beating the French Paul-Henri Mathieu.
2008
Again he couldn’t break his loosing-streak in the Australia Open after getting disqualified in the fourth round. He reached the semifinals of Dubai but lost against Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
In The Sonny Ericsson Open in Miami he managed to recover and beat Rafa Nadal in the final. This was the second Masters Series title of his career.
In the ATP Masters Series tournaments of Estoril and Monte Carlo he was semi-finalist after losing to Federer and Nadal respectively. In Roland Garros, Ivan Ljubicic defeated him in the third round. In the first round of Wimbledon he lost to Benjamin Becker.
From there he continued getting sent home in the early rounds of the other major tournaments he participated in, including the Olympic Games in Beijing, where the Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu cut his way into the second round. In the U. S. Open he reached the fourth round.
He recovered at the end of the season after reaching the final of the Tennis Masters Cup, where he fell against the Serbian, Novak Djokovic, with a score of 1-6 5-7
2009
Due to a foot injury, Nikolay Davydenko could not participate in the Australia Open this year. He made his return to the tennis courts in Rotterdam, where he was eliminated by Julien Benneteau in the second round.
He kept having trouble with his injury. Because of this the Russian could not participate in the Davis Cup or the Masters Series of Indian Wells and Miami.
In Roland Garros, he reached the quarter-finals but was eliminated by Robin Soderling.
He claimed his first title of the year in July, when he defeated the French player Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2 in Hamburg. Then he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the Umag tournament. He continued with his good run after winning the tournament in Kuala Lumpur against Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-5.
In the Shanghai Masters he won his third ATP title, by beating Rafael Nadal 7-6, 6-3.
In November, he obtained the Tennis Masters Cup championship in London, after beating the Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.
2010
Nikolay Davydenko began this year with one more title, the Doha tournament, in where he beat Rafael Nadal in the final. In the Australia Open he broke his winning streak by getting eliminated after four rounds, by Roger Federer
